unwavering God
Throughout Scripture we find that God's nature never wavers. It never contradicts Him. It never breaks His promises. It never forsakes His children. As I look over the Old Testament, I find that the theme of God's nature is summed up in Malachi 3:6--"For I the LORD do not change." He is unchanging, unchangeable, unflinching in His sovereignty, and constant to us in all His ways. His ways are never mistaken. He is sovereign and good. He is the same yesterday, today, tomorrow and always. As far as the east is from the west, He is the unchanging, unchangeable God.
On the opposite spectrum, I find that I do change. I do waver in my actions, thoughts, words, and deeds. I definitely contradict myself. I have certainly broken my promises. I have forsaken my friends and family. And I have clearly forsaken God and gone my own way. Everything that God is, is completely what I am not. As much as I dislike admitting this, I am not the same yesterday as I am today and will not be tomorrow either. I will always change. I will be unfaithful. I will make mistakes. I will falter. I will forget. I will alter my steps. I will endure pain. I will experience suffering. I will know sadness. I will mess up. I will continue to change. But this is also a good thing--I was changed in the redemption of Christ and I am changing through the trials, blessings, and lessons of life for the glory of God.
In this weary, fallen world we can find comfort in the unchanging, loving, merciful, and unwavering Lord. He will remain always without spot or wrinkle or change or decay. His presence cannot be consumed by fire or fury or darkness and evil. His sovereignty cannot be shortened or brought low. Seasons change. Times change. People change. But in this changing and decaying world, there is an unchanging God that has always been God. "Truly, truly I tell you, before Abraham was, I AM." - John 8:58
"Change and decay in all around I see, O Thou who changest not, abide with me." - Henry Lyte
Beautifully said! This is one of my most favorite and comforting characteristics of God! :)
